Bharatanatyam, the classical style of dance of Tamilnadu is one of the most developed, highly structured and wellcodified systems of dance in the world. The three main aspects of Bharatanatyam are Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive dance) and Natya (dramatic element). Nritya is expressive dance, or dance that conveys a particular idea, story, character, mood or situation. Bharatha, in his Natya Sastra, speaks of a four fold system of abhinaya or audio visual communication that may be used to communicate a particular theme. Among the four fold system of abhinaya, satvika abhinaya or interplay of emotions exhibited by a sensitive and mature artist and may be considered as the soul of a Bharathanatyam performance. The Rasa Sutra says that a harmonious blend of the vibhavas, anubhavas and vyabicharibhavas gives rise to Rasa or aesthetic experience. Vyabichari bhavas, also referred to as sanchari bhavas, are light, fleeting emotions that appear and disappear in quick succession and serve to strengthen the sthayi bhava or permanent emotion in a song. This 2DVD & 2Audio CD seeks to explore the scope and usage of Sanchari Bhava with reference to the items of a traditional Bharatanatyam Margam.
